Salem Thattu vadai set is a roadside delight originated from Yercaud. North Indians can relate this to papdi chaat. Thattai is a savoury rice flour crispies, converted to a sandwich by smearing spicy chutney and tangy chutney, stuffing with grated and spiced up veggie salad, generously garnishing with sev or crushed thattais
Pro-tips-
- You can unleash your creativity by adding a different chutney or replacing different veggies with your choice of spices, add roasted peanuts, crushed Murukku or thattai for garnish.
- Increase or decrease garlic according to your palate’s requirements. Or you can even replace it with sweet chutney.
- In tangy green chutney, I added raw mango, which u can replace it with tamarind or tomato.

Ingredients:
Garlicky Tomato Chutney-
Garlic-1/8 cup
Kashmiri chillies-4
Regular long/round chillies-6
Tomato-1 big
Tamarind- ¼ tsp
Jaggery-¼ tsp
Salt- as reqd
Tangy Green Chutney-
Coriander leaves-1 cup
Green chilli-2
Chopped ginger-1 tsp
Raw Mango-1/8 cup
Cumin seeds-½ tsp
Jaggery-¼ tsp
Lemon juice- 1tbsp
Salt- as reqd
Veggies Salad-
Grated beetroot-½ cup
Grated carrot-½ cup
Grated cucumber-½ cup
Chopped raw mango-¼ cup
Chopped onion-¼ cup
Chilli powder- 1 tbsp
Salt- as reqd
For Garnish-
Black salt-¼ tsp (optional)
Chaat masala-¼ tsp (optional)
Nylon sev-as reqd
Instructions-
- Raw Garlicky Tomato Chutney, add all the ingredients mentioned under it in a mixer jar and grind it into a smooth chutney.
- Similarly grind everything mentioned under Tangy Green Chutney in a mixer jar and finally add the lemon juice and run once.
- For mix veggie salad, mix everything mentioned under it and rest it for 10 mins.Then squeeze extra moisture from the veggies.
- Now smear garlicky red chutney on one side of one thattai, tangy chutney on one side of another thattai.
- Stuff red chutney smeared thattai with salad veggies, sprinkle some black salt and chaat masala mix, nylon sev. Close it with tangy chutney smeared thattai.
- Serve immediately, as it’ll turn soggy after sometime.
