Oats French Toast 5/5 (1)

French Toast aka Pain Perdu  in french translates to “ lost bread “, as mostly stale or lost bread is transformed into a new dish. It has other variation such as German toast, egg bread. Generally, they can be served in two forms namely, sweet and savoury.

Sweet form includes milk, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla and is pan fried to golden brown and then topped with fruits,  butter or syrup.

Savoury form includes salt and pepper and then topped with ketchup or mayonnaise.

This Healthy Oats French Toast is very simple and easy. My teens prepare it for the breakfast, and I like those days as it’s my day off in the kitchen..😛. It’s so kids friendly that they themselves can prepare it, if they are good at handling the heat in the kitchen. As a mom, you can lay back and relish the meal in content. I swear, it’s a lovely experience.

As the recipe says healthy, the nutritional addition I added in this recipe is Oats. Apart from its nutrient value, it also yields a crunchy texture to the toast as it’s coated evenly on all sides.  Alternatively, you can try crushed corn flakes, which also serves the same purpose as oats for its nutritional value and crispy texture.

It can be made vegetarian or a vegan toast by adding nutritional yeast or cornstarch as egg substitute. Milk can be substituted with almond or soy milk for vegans and dairy free diet. To conclude, Healthy Oats French Toast is a wholesome breakfast or brunch recipe packed with nutrients and flavours. It’s a must try recipe. One more added advantage is it’s a life saver when you are left with stale breads at home.

Notes:

  • Browning the butter gives an extra nutty aroma to the toast. If you have time constraints, feel free to skip it. Otherwise, don’t miss it.
  • To be handier, prepare the toast batter, a day before and refrigerate. On the day of cooking, again combine the batter well, dip the breads and toast it.
  • The condiments I added are cinnamon, nutmeg. I leave it to your choice if you wish to add more condiments.
  • Soaking the bread slices in the mixture involves a technique. If the bread is thin and white bread, quickly flip the sides, as it will absorb the liquid mixture super fast.
  • Longer you soak the bread, the soggier it becomes.
  • Be generous with the butter while toasting, as it helps in the crunchy texture and sweet aroma of the toast.
  • Serving suggestions vary with your creativity, generally, goes well with syrups and fruit toppings.
  • I included Oats as a healthier version, it also adds a nice texture to the toast.
